The definitive review, really. It tipped the scales. Then again I'd definitely prefer a dancing Trotsky...

@Andrew: Yeah, 20k is a bit of a barrier to dumping a mental idea on a console. 'Tis a shame that it creates a world so risk averse but I guess that's sort of the point of it.

Makes you wonder when stuff like Zombie Wranglers makes it through intact though.

@Cymon. I had fun with it. Lots of it, in fact. It's quite sadistic in places with the level design and perhaps it's the design wanker in me but I found that hilarious.

I mentioned on Tim's blog when it first came out that the first campaign I slogged my way round the map in the wrong direction to what the game wanted me to go (easily done, honest guv) to get to an alien horde. Upon reaching the aliens, I find out they're on the other side of a bridge and the bridge is out. There's only one way back and that's to go all the way back round the map again.

There's no way you could do that accidentally, y'know? It took me a good five minutes to stop laughing at the cheek of the bloody thing. You can't tell me that no-one would have spotted that and then laughed themselves senseless at the cruelty of it.

It is deliberately broken and it doesn't really care that it's broken and goes with the flow still. If anyone goes into it expecting a serious RTS with (any) layers of strategy, well, you're not going to get that. You're just meant to speed through the thing, throw massive amounts of artillery and troops at these Toy Story aliens and get to the next mission and joke as fast as possible.

Essentially, it asks you to give just as much of a fuck as it does. If you strategise or take your time, you'll die. If you park up 50 tanks and some troops, you'll win.

I can see why some people aren't happy with that as gaming is a serious business, man. I'd have thought the 1st mission on the 1st campaign would have gave some folks a clue as to what the game is about though. You start the game, you're immediately involved in some sort of skirmish that lasts mere seconds and you do absolutely nothing in order to win. It's *that* dumb.

So Stalin vs Martians is a B-Game with a big advertising budget. So it's the Quentin Terrention of video games, only funnier.

I enjoyed the ride up to the release but decided pretty early on that it wasn't the game for me. I think its viral marketing campaign got me sick of it.

Still, it seems to me that it broke a rule. Games imply fun. The word "game" usually has something to do with fun. And everything surrounding the game has been fun. But is the game itself fun? Seems to me, and I haven't played it, but it seems to me that everyone thought they were getting an invite to a wild party, paid their cover charge, and when got in they realized it was a three stooges marathon with a child with a debilitating condition and they felt ripped off.

I'll be getting the game once I'm done with other, B-like games (Mount & Blade is actually very good in some places, but very B-game in other places :) , and Killing Floor looks to be B-like both graphically and in it's over-the-topness, especially after Left4Dead).

I'd love more B-games, at reasonable prices - good for me as a PC gamer, but shame you don't see more of them on consoles. The whole licensing and certification issues really makes B-games impossible since they would never, ever make a profit thus would be impossible to produce, despite there being a big market for it!

The game had me sold at the music video, STALIN DANCE! I need more dumbness to kill my brain sometimes. Great post btw!
