Yup, the unlock system is the games undoing really and as entertaining as it is, I don't think any amount of Nebin and the news can salvage it from being a horrid grindy system that has no place in a score attack game.

Given the amount of care and love gone into so much of it (at last count, lots) it seems insane to lock people out of x amount of levels depending on their ability. Letting them score -something- no matter how miniscule is better than them never seeing the stage at all. Having a constant onscreen reminder in the shape of the cubes of "look what you could win if only you weren't shit" really doesn't help either.

I still love it as a game but folks need to start quitting doing that stuff. It's nasty, grindy stuff that saps enjoyment and replaces it with chores.

I thought Aaaaa! was pretty fun, but it didn't give me much excuse to play it. I got to the point where I just wasn't good enough and I ran out of teeth with about 3/4 of the cubes unlocked. I think the personality and the style of it is very important to bolstering the fair-to-good bare bones of play. Fretting about which square to unlock, hoping you won't spend all those teeth on a really difficult one that isn't fun, would be much more stressful without Nebin and the news.

I loved CoD 1 & 2, I'll still play them, and I believe the new one does try to improve, but I play a game because I want to go somewhere new, you know? I want to be doing something I've never done before.
