MattV Interview and New Rodentia

June 27, 2008 · Filed Under Articles · Comment

It’s been a bit long coming due to a few problems over at Rodent Towers, but the interview I did with Matt V of Hermit Games is now up and online for your enjoyment. I’ve not even had chance to gander over the rest of the content yet as there’s looooooads but I can certainly vouch for the quality of my article.

One of the great things about being Indie (not Goro, although that might be an advantage too) is that you’re free to fuck around with concepts and idea’s that the commercial publishers wouldn’t touch with someone elses bargepole roughly the size of South Africa.

So, lets celebrate, dear readers, five games whose concepts would never manage to get past the pitching stage at a mainstream publishers…

Remakes 100

*UPDATE* - The work is done, the list is complete - read it at Retro Remakes

You might have already seen this post on Tims Blog, or this post on Retro Remakes about the Big 100 I’m currently attempting to throw together.

Yes, its reactionary, yes the methodology is in all likelihood flawed, but the great thing about it is, the end result will be completely unfiltered, no editorial control whatsoever - whatever gets voted for, gets slung in the list. At the moment its sitting on around 350 games give or take a couple, with over 50 lists all compiled together.

Not bad for the first two days and only a couple of places asked at the moment - and yes, there’s currently an Indie game sitting comfortably in the number one spot, not Ocarina Of Time…and much to my joy, a shooter sitting pretty at number 10. So far, its proving my guess correct, that if you ask folks really what they like, then you get a complete mixed bag of games that are a mix of the predictable and the completely off the wall. And thats fucking brilliant.

But we need more votes, so I’m going to kick this around a few other places over the next week or so- if anyone wants to post it elsewhere and try and get more lists together then be my guest, because the more the merrier and the more it represents us lot - the ones they never ask to contribute to these polls.

I’m keeping a track of all the games as they come in, and building myself up to write out a blurb for each one - not going to be a small task but its gonna be worth it in the end, I reckon. Top 10’s to remakes100 AT gmail DOT com if you please, all comers welcome.

Rodent #85

Way Of The Rodent 85

Yes, its that time of the month again where we’re celebrating the release of this months Way Of The Rodent web magazine.

My very own Indie column resurfaces for the second time with a nod and a wink to the excellent Chalk as well as featuring a rather wordy section and interview with Cliffski on his recent Rock Legend release.

“Cliff offers you the chance to turn it up to eleven, to do that rumpty dumpty bismila business, to put armadillo’s in your pants and to live out those spandex clad fantasies of rock stardom, all without the cost of smashed-up hotels or ever having to endure a barrage of piss filled bottles.”

Also in this months fine issue, and one that I’m still working my way through inbetween typing this out is a lot of loving for the real American dream that is Funspot, The Phantom Hourglass, Toejam & Earl, Forza, Card Fighters Clash DS and lots, lots more! (I’ve almost got this sales pitch down pat, haven’t I?)

Lets not forget about this months Image Of The Month as well, with Rodent Bites… Food for thought indeed.

Enjoy.

A Guided Tour Of JSWO #1

May 31, 2007 · Filed Under Articles · 1 Comment

Well, the games been around long enough now and is certainly stable enough that I guess its time to tell some of the stories behind the rooms. There’s a huge amount of new rooms we created for the game, so here’s a quick guide to the influences and inspiration behind their creation. There’s already a fairly good guide to the new rooms added for Jet Set Willy II courtesy of Steve Wetherill so it’d be rather pointless to dwell on those also - so lets just concentrate on the new stuff in JSWO.

Obviously, this is also going to be pretty copious - so I’ll post this in segments. Hit the jump and lets start with Space from the main map.
