Hah, see what I did there? Due to manflu likely caused by an excess of ranting of late (note to self: post more happy shiny things) I’m running a few days behind this week but here goes all the same. Links and goodness and things and stuff.

Game Ovr - via Auntie Pixelante, an ace collection of game related images to idle your time over.

This is Ciellus - I meant to post a while back but it slipped my mind, more timely now that Terry has announced he’s going to be ploughing some serious time and work into it. The teaser shot made me a tad moist in departments it really shouldn’t have.

Konami attempting to censor MSG4 reviews - “Konami issued us with a list of things that we’re not allowed to discuss. This list of prohibited topics is pretty long, and even extends as far as several facts that the company itself has already made public”, the disclaimer that sets off more alarm bells than a fire at a fire alarm factory. Via The Escapist.

Collectible Design In Games - I usually subscribe to the point of view that they’re pretty much a cheap shot design decision yet I’ve spent so much time with C4 hunting down orbs in Crackdown it’s spooky. Christ, I’ve got a 4 year old who looks out for the glow and throbbing sound and points to where to go. Obviously, Realtime Worlds got something seriously right here.

The Gematria Project - I’m sure I’ve heard of this bloke before… gratuitous self promotion ahoy. My music on MySpace. May cause brain tumours.

Condemned To Hell - The Texas governor is this years keynote speaker for E3? No wonder companies are scooting off from the ESA at an epic rate. Mental.

Edge review Noitu Love 2 - and award it 7/10. An Edge 7 is roughly on par with every other magazines 40 gazillion rating. They’re still unreadable though.

Painkiller - a few weeks late on this, but some love from Yahtzee for the oft derided People Can Fly Robotron meets FPS one off (yes, there is only one - la,la,la,la,la,la etc…). To coin a phrase “what he said”. I fucking love Painkiller, it’s so gloriously dumb.

Time to start getting back on track with this here blog methinks, so here’s a (”half a” due to restricted net access) weeks worth of essential reading from other fine places on the ol’ interweb.

Why The Industry Shouldn’t Rely On Metacritic - more timely than ever considering the recent announcement by MS that games will live or die via critics.

The Trouble With Demos - scarily, I’ve never quite got my head around *why* people don’t understand the value of a good demo. You’d almost think they don’t want me to cough up the cash. Interestingly the article uses Timeshift, one of the most colossally cock demos I’ve ever had the misfortune to wade through, as an example of how not to do it. Words of fine wisdom contained herein.

An Interview with The Balrog - Gnome does it again with some Zenobi loving. A fine interview from a fine interviewer and the finest of subjects.

What is the world coming to? - Help me Mrs Medlicott, I don’t know what to do. I’ve only got 3 bullets and there’s 4 in Motley Crue. Seriously. You people are giving Motley Crue money? Are you mad?

Pixeljunk Eden - Where design wankery meets games. And not in a depressing way for a change.

Red Fish, Green Fish, Blue Fish - SHARK! - Handy handheld DIY gaming.

I Miss Color - Having recently made attempt #2 at playing through Gears Of War and finding myself plummeting to new depths of depression as a result (partly through awful game and partly through having never seen quite so many shades of grey in my life) I can’t help but nod in agreement. But then, I’m right behind the Blue Skies In Gaming campaign too…

Difficulty Difficulties - More “make easy easy” shenanigans. “Well I started off with good intentions and ended up cursing and calling people jerks (Sorry Puzzle Quest makers), it happens.” - I know that feeling well…

Inno Vation - Tim reports on a new Omega game. Internet rejoices. Probably.

RPS review Smileys Shooty Adventure so I don’t have to - My short review anyway. Better than Everyday Shooter, not as good as Grid Wars - not quite “out there” to be amongst the gods but definitely worth a punt.

Back once again with the renegade linkmaster. My pick of this weeks exciting happenings in the world of the interweb. Just six this week as officially the internet took a week off due to GTA. Cock.

Why Game History Matters - “Whether plumbing the depths of The Hobbit on a Sinclair ZX Spectrum or reading Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo a good developer hones her/his craft through immersing her/himself in history.”

Dux Gameplay Video - Holy plastic R-Type Batman. The enemy seem a little lifeless, but so far I love the style.

Smiley’s Shooty Adventure - Llamatron via Geometry Wars via emoticon, pixelripalicious.

Fruitaku - your only source of fruit related video game news. Ahar!

Bruce Everiss vs Pesky Reality - what?

What Gamers Want: Family Gamers - “By the time I look down and figure out which button to press, it’s already too late and I’ve crashed.” “Why do you need so many buttons? All I want to do is steer the car”.

Good lord, is it that time already? It only seems like a week since I last dropped a link dump… oh, that’s right - it is a week. Durrrh. Ever onwards then with some links of stuff and things that have impressed me this week.

Fun From Yesterday - munged up Atari2600 game covers. Some funny, some not. However, fucking with game art is something I heartily approve of.

Half Man Half Biscuit:CSI Ambleside - out Monday. Utter genius as ever. “Tonight you’ll be sitting on top of Lord Hereford’s Knob”. Quite.

The Escapist Post Mortem Issue - I used to be inclined to really detest The Escapist when it first burst onto the scene as it invariably involved too many words to say too little. Nice to see things have changed drastically and the latest issue is a must read. I especially enjoyed the Mucky Foot article.

Zenoclash - Awesome art style, trailer looks a bit disappointing. Fingers crossed though. And is this a badger?

The Art Of Braid - Man, I hate doing title screens but if I could make title screens that looked like this, I’d make them every single day. Also, I want Braid to hurry the damn up so I can play it.

Adventures Of Alex - Cute game. Contains pissing. What more could you ask for? Aside from more tits and a slightly less temperamental “will it work, won’t it?” thing going on.

Dreamcast Chicken Thing - I love UK Resistance. Needs more Sony baiting though.

Carbon Offset Deathstar - I really need to actually collar Ed and try and make a game with him at some point.

Polymaniacs - New video. New hanky required. The game looks awesome.

New Ablation X video - Nurse!

The Wild Bunch

Ahoy there my hearties, some things that impressed me this week and are deserving of your attention.

Sub Pixel Message Generator - likely one of the most useless things in the history of development, but non the less darn fucking cool all the same.

One Switch Blog - Barrie’s blog gets a makeover. Also check out the link to the one handed controllers where design feedback is called for.

The Discovery of Milliways - Some rather personal insight into an acquired Infocom drive and playable builds of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy sequel that never was. Complete with bonus collection of various Infocom staffers, Michael Bywater, Anita Sinclair and the usual array of daft commentators. On one hand proof the internet is fantastic, and on the other, proof the internet can be a depressing place.
