XNA Community Games: No free games at launch

I’m not surprised, but it’s certainly what I didn’t want to hear about the XNA community stuff… here’s the Wired article with the lowdown.

Developers will not be able to release free games at launch, Microsoft said. All games on the service must be priced.

Satchell said free games are a possibility in the future, although Microsoft still has questions. “Do we really want a free tier? If we do, how do we structure that? We’re going to start with the model that we know, which is transactions, and then go from there,” he said.

I was skeptical before, now I’m just dismayed.

Sometimes good things come out of the bad. Scott’s 360 finally met it’s maker (as is their want) after a year and a half of reliable service. On the bright side, it’s led to the RROD room in George’s Squizzy Griffin.
